Historische Übersicht
Als Rosenkriege werden die mit Unterbrechungen von 1455 bis 1485 geführten Kämpfe zwischen den beiden rivalisierenden englischen Adelshäusern York und Lancaster bezeichnet. Die Adelshäuser waren verschiedene Zweige des Hauses Plantagenet und führten ihre Stammlinie auf König Eduard III. zurück, woraus sie ihren Anspruch auf die englische Königskrone ableiteten: Die Lancasters waren 1399 auf den Thron gelangt, doch das Haus York sah sich übergangen. Als König Heinrich VI. aus dem Haus Lancaster in geistige Umnachtung fiel, löste dies schließlich den offenen Bürgerkrieg aus. Die Auseinandersetzungen forderten einen sehr hohen Blutzoll im britischen Adel und beendeten unter anderem die männlichen Abstammungslinien dieser beiden Häuser.
