This is a fascinating 1852 map of the French department of Vienne, France.  Vienne is renowned for its production of chevre, or goat cheese, and is a vital industry in this department. The map proper is surrounded by elaborate decorative engravings designed to illustrate both the natural beauty and trade richness of the land. There is a short textual history of the regions depicted on both the left and right sides of the map.  Published by V. Levasseur in the 1852 edition of his  Atlas National de la France Illustree.

Historical Overview

The Battle of Poitiers was fought on 19 September 1356, during the Hundred Years' War, between a French army commanded by King John II and an Anglo-Gascon force under Edward, the Black Prince. It took place in western France, 5 miles (8 km) south of Poitiers, when approximately 14,000 to 16,000 French attacked a strong defensive position held by 6,000 Anglo-Gascons.
