Formation flypast of RAF Aircraft types that participated in the Battle of Britain in 1940, 5 Hawker Hurricanes (including 1 Sea Hurricane), 3 Supermarine Mk.1 Spitfires and a Bristol Blenheim Mk.1(F). The Hurricanes then went on to complete a 4 ship display, followed by a separate display by one of the Spitfires together with the Blenheim

The painting is an attempt to give the sense of an aerial battle in operation over a wide area and thus summarises England's great aerial victory over Germany. The scene includes certain elements constant during the Battle of Britain - the river winding from the town and across parched country, down to the sea; beyond, the shores of the Continent, above, the mounting cumulus concentrating at sunset after a hot brilliant day; across the spaces of sky, trails of airplanes, smoke tracks of dead or damaged machines falling, floating clouds, parachutes, balloons. Against the approaching twilight new formations of Luftwaffe, threatening...

This stunning formation of Battle of Britain types is led by the newly restored Blenhiem, now representing a MkI. Around her are three MkI Spitfires, while a lone Hurricane brings up the rear. The Blenhiem is actually Bolingbroke '10201' (G-BPIV) The Spitfires are:- N3200 (G-CFGJ) in genuine 19sqn markings, X4650 (G-CGUK) in genuine 54sqn markings as 'KL-A' and AR213 (G-AIST) painted as 'P7308 / XR-D' of 71(Eagle)sqn.
