Battle of the Somme

An early model British Mark I "male" tank, named C-15, near Thiepval, 25 September 1916. The tank is probably in reserve for the Battle of Thiepval Ridge which began on 26 September. The tank is fitted with the wire "grenade shield" and steering tail, both features discarded in the next models.

1 Battalion, Norfolk Regiment Lt Brown enlisted in September 1914 and was commissioned in June 1915. He was posted to the Western Front in July 1916 and killed near Guillemont during the Battle of the Somme on 4 September 1916. Lt Brown is buried at Delville Wood Cemetery, Longueval.
