First Lieutenant Walter Raleigh Butt, Confederate States Navy, served on the CSS Virginia, 1862.

Accesson: 2004-71-27 Award, Medal, Civil War, Navy 2.18 "H x 1.43 "W Medal, Civil War, Navy, serial# 179. Medal awarded to Ensign Lewis R. Hamersley who served on the Aroostook. The obverse of the medal has a depiction of the battle between the Monitor and the Merrimac on 9th March 1862, The medal was authorized on the 27th of June 1908. Collection of Curator Branch, Naval History and Heritage Command.

Accession: 66-318-A Shell Fragment, CSS Virginia 2.5" H x 3.75" W Shell fragment fired from the CSS Virginia into the USS Congress during the Battle at Hampton Roads on the 8th of March 1862. The Virginia also engaged the USS Cumberland which sank. Collection of Curator Branch, Naval History and Heritage Command.

Print shows a battle scene between the ironclads Monitor and Merrimac just offshore, also shows a Union ship sinking and rescue boats being put to sea from shore, as well as a Union artillery bunker, Union soldiers and officers, and some rescued sailors.
