Leaning against a pillar on the right is James W. Davidson, of the New York Herald, on whose left is Interpreter Kashimura. Standing together on his left are the members of the Depot Headquarters. Grouped before them are Chinese coolies and among them women, the women of the place differing little from male labourers as small feet are rare among them. Some of the coolies bear on their shoulders rain-coats made of palm sheathing. The piles of wood in front are litters. Taken on the 27th September, 1895.

Admiral Count Kabayama, first Governor-General of Formosa; Mr. Mizuno, Chief of Civil Administration; Rear Admiral Tsunoda; and man and woman aborigines, in front row.
