This photo depicts some of the markers that marks the location of the gun sites during the battle of Colenso with Hlangwane hill in the background. It would seem as if the terrain has been altered somewhat if compared to the photo at this South African Military History Society article.

The Second Boer War, 1899-1902 The gun position of the Royal Field Artillery captured by the Boer commando overlooking the River Tugela from the Rooiberg after the Battle of Colenso. For trying to save the gun emplacement from capture by the enemy, Lieutenant Frederick Roberts was awarded the Victoria Cross.
