Secret History of Silicon Valley

[Recorded: November 20, 2008] Today, Silicon Valley is known around the world as a fount of technology innovation and development fueled by private venture capital and peopled by fabled entrepreneurs. But it wasn’t always so. Unbeknownst to even seasoned inhabitants, today’s Silicon Valley had its start in government secrecy and wartime urgency. In this lecture, renowned serial entrepreneur Steve Blank presents how the roots of Silicon Valley sprang not from the later development of the silicon semiconductor but instead from the earlier technology duel over the skies of Germany and secret efforts around (and over) the Soviet Union. World War II, the Cold War and one Stanford professor set the stage for the creation and explosive growth of entrepreneurship in Silicon Valley. The world was forever changed when the Defense Department, CIA and the National Security Agency acted like today’s venture capitalists funding this first wave of entrepreneurship. Steve Blank shows how these groundbreaking early advances lead up to the high-octane, venture capital fueled Silicon Valley we know today.

and losses. For this reason, most have no clue of what really happened; i.e. don’t see the whole picture. As my friend from Oklahoma says, “I see that history and marketing have quite a lot in common”.)
It would be very interesting to see what the Skolkovo project will turn out to be in a few years time; will it be successful?
Great, interesting and a rather informative presentation, although didn’t tell the whole story about the WWII, it seems. It had, in fact, all started during the early 1930s for the USSR, Japan, and the almighty USSR had lost approximately 27 million people altogether to the Germans and the Japanese during that war. A truly staggering statistics. That must always be said and remembered! (Having been born in the USSR, it always gets to me when Americans talk only of themselves and their own wins
oohh nice video ,,,funny …I always thought and ever hoped someone could make.it….”to zip ” 1.o.1.1..ehehe . a lot of troubles of memory space in our pc…perhaps ??
@tjbayliss Now you see venture capitalists acting like hawks swooping down on companies in India and China. They know what’s going to happen next.
Once those people have the money, they would start making more revenue than those US ones.
epic
I’ll retract the word “countries” from my comment and change it to “governments + people in power”
@tjbayliss I’ll be msging you in two years for a recap.
Very interesting video. All you people turning into a economi/political debate shhhhhhh. Its a video about technology you damn trolls.
@DigitalStudent I will send you some info on Linux…The post would be to big for this forum…
How is Linux American?
To solve the problem, when it arises, they will try and push an “Amero” on Canada, Mexico, and the rest of South America, as a “joint currency” for all of the Americas.
Whatever you guys do, don’t let that happen - otherwise you’ll just pull even more countries into your failings.
Well technically im not 100% British - so I have no problem saying that England & America are the most evil countries on the entire planet.
Feel better now? :)
America & Britain lecture everyone about democracy and fairness - but in reality they are the ones destroying the 3rd World - dominating the planet - and turning it to shit.
I never said England was any better.
America is just the biggest cause of military funding.
By miles.
@tjbayliss this is rich - a brit lecturing us on conquest, military folly, and impunity. can you say kenya? no? try malaysia, palestine, south africa, india, afghanistan… if it weren’t so sad it *would* be funny. read caroline elkins “imperial reckoning” for a glimpse of the culmination of 500 years of moral bankruptcy.
TJ Baylis is absoltely right, as are the other people getting thumbs down for no reason, other of course than most sheeple are already lost in a swirl of their own conditioning. Keep it up man.
Well lets think about the items that can be purchased with the American Dollar.
Well for example, you could not even start your computer today with out the 2 American company’s that dominate CPU production in personal computers worldwide… Intel and AMD.
And then lets think about the operating systems for the PC, Windows has 90% of the worldwide market and Apple is its only real competition. AND other operating systems Maybe Linux another good old American product,it is what it is..
lol i can’t believe ppl are giving u thumbs down… because its 100% correct.
MOST technology advancement comes from military funding…. which usually means America pays for it…. with money they print out of thin air…… so they can use it to continue killing people all around the world!
Lovely ppl really!
You do realise that like 75% of the money in your economy doesn’t even exist.
lol…
America’s going to crash in the next 2 years… badly.
Your fault for letting the Federal Reserve print money all the time if it feels like it………….
NO GOOD OLD R and D and a $14 TRILLION DOLLAR ECONOMY…
.
Most technology development is fuelled by America’s military conquest to be honest!
noob
Alex understand that history varies depending on where you learned it. :P
“attach” “annex”, same thing.
At least in the Soviet sense.
Idiot, Soviet did not attach Poland. They annexed territory after Germany already occupied Poland. By the way, first strategic bombing of Germany, Berlin to be more exact, was done by Soviets in July 1941.
Hes right. Do a search you will see 4 mounts with 2 engines each.
B52 a 4 engine plane? Try 8.
