Colorado Teacher Wins National History Teacher of the Year Award

Washington (PRWEB) June 16, 2006

National History Day (NHD) announced that Mark High of Gunnison Middle School in Gunnison, Colo. is the winner of the 2006 Richard T. Farrell Teacher of Merit Award for outstanding success in teaching history.

The award is given annually to a teacher who develops and uses innovative methods to make history interesting for students. This award recognizes outstanding success in history teaching. High received $ 1,000, a commemorative plaque and a collection of historical documentaries from PBS VIDEO.

High’s teaching methods involve the parents and other members of the community in his students’ learning including “Renaissance Night” and a trial of Christopher Columbus in the courthouse.

Known to many as “Duke Mark,” High has created a classroom ranking system called a royalty chart to reward student achievement. Students begin the year as peasants in the Kingdom of Gunnison Middle School where they must learn the Knight’s Code of Ethics and improve themselves through service and challenges in order to be knighted in a special ceremony.

In High’s class “my daughter has discovered a new interest in social studies/history and new relationship to current events,” said Susan Barrett, the parent of a seventh grade student.

More than a student competition, NHD is a campaign to change the teaching and learning of history in our nation’s classrooms. The program is having a profound impact on education and received the Charles Frankel Prize for Public Programming from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
